Old Water Towers

The water towers rising above urban communities in the Midwest provide the means by which water pressure is maintained throughout municipal water systems.  Often the towers are one of the most distinctive landmarks visible in villages and cities.  As they age beyond practical repair, older water towers are being replaced by new structures.  As time passes, the shapes of these distinctive structures also have evolved.  Earlier towers often were cylindrical with bowl shaped bottoms and conical, peaked tops.  Newer towers are of round or oval shapes.  Although more efficient, the new towers lack the visual character of the older versions.

When driving through Minnesota in recent years, I have stopped to photograph old water towers whenever I have seen them along the route I am traveling.  At least one photograph from each town listed below is included in the display.
